India vs Pakistan 1st One Day
India - 281/8 of 50 Overs
Pakistan - 194/a.o. of 45.2 Overs
India posted a comfortable win in the 1st of the six one day series against arch rivals Pakistan. The 87 run victory by India was made possible due to the valiant effort by Veeru and Dravid. While Sehwag scored a swashbuckling 108 off just 95 balls, Dravid scored a convincing 104 off 128 balls. They joined hands when India was tottering at 4 runs for the loss of Sachin and Ganguly and shared a 201 run partnership for the 3rd wicket. The highlight of the partnership was the steady pace at which the runs were scored after an initial slump in run rate. Sans these two, none of the other Indian batsmen made an impact on the placid batting track. India ended the 50 overs with 281, which is a good score, but definitely attainable given the pitch conditions and Pakistan’s aggressive batting.
Pakistan did start well racing to 45 by the end of 6th over. Then Balaji struck to send back Akmal. Enter Nehra, a man eager to prove a point - resulted in Butt’s exit. Malik and Youhana were out cheaply and suddenly India seemed to have the upper hand. Inzi and Hafeez put up a revival act, only to watch Tendulkar demonstrate his bowling knack. Sachin claimed 5 wickets, incidentally his previous 5 wicket haul was also in Kochi. Pakistan was bundled for 194 thus giving India a much needed victory to boost their confidence. Though India won, it must be noted that India would have been in a tight spot had Veeru or Dravid had not clicked. All is well that end’s well – lets savor the moment!
