Tri Series Match I - India vs Sri Lanka: India suffers a defeat
India - 205/9 in 50 Overs
Sri Lanka - 209/7 in 48.2 Overs
India started their new season on a disastrous note losing to Sri Lanka in the first game of the Indian Oil tri series being held at Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka made rough weather of the low scoring match and eventually won the self-made thriller by 3 wickets and 10 balls to spare.
Rahul Dravid won the toss and elected to bat on a good batting track. As the luck may have it for India, both its openers were cheaply dismissed leaving the onus yet again on Dravid. Yuvraj and Kaif continued their consistently inconsistent appalling form. Debutant Venugopal Rao provided some resistance along with Dravid who made a watchful half-century. A late order flurry from Bhajji and Zaheer ensured India pass the 200 mark - a total, which is nowhere going to be defendable considering the pitch and the depth in SL batting.
On the contrary to the expectations of SL batting line up - Sri Lanka struggled to coast a comfortable victory. Indian bowlers did really well to restrict the Lankans, but unfortunately did not have much score on the board to defend. Irfan and Zaheer bowled well in tandem to provide crucial break through at regular intervals. Jayasuriya who had dislocated his shoulder came out and ensured a Sri Lankan victory. A heroic innings given the nature of his injury – but not sure if he should have risked it so much.
Indians are slow starters in any tournament and this loss was not surprising to me. Hope they would come good in the days to come to perform better.
